Everything you need to know before you go. Chester is easy to reach and most of the Roman sights are free and open-air.
Getting there
- By train: Chester station has direct services from Liverpool, Manchester, London and North Wales. It's about a 15-minute walk to the walls, or a short bus ride.
- By car: Chester is just off the A55/M53. Use a Park & Ride or city-edge car park — the walled centre is congested.
How long do you need?
You can see the headline Roman sites — amphitheatre, walls, Roman Gardens and Minerva's Shrine — in a half day. Add the Grosvenor Museum and Dewa Roman Experience, plus the Rows and cathedral, and it's a full, comfortable day.
What's free and what isn't

Accessibility
The amphitheatre and Roman Gardens are largely at ground level. The walls involve steps at the gates and uneven surfaces, so the full circuit isn't step-free — but parts can be joined at street level. Check specific access needs with the attraction before you travel.
Best time to visit
Spring to early autumn gives the best weather for the open-air sites. Weekdays are quieter than weekends; avoid Chester Races days if you want a calmer city and cheaper rooms. See where to stay for booking tips.
