About Chester Romans
Chester Romans is an independent guide to Roman Chester, made by OakFox, a small web studio. It is not connected to English Heritage, Cheshire West and Chester Council or any of the venues it describes. Its job is to help you find and understand what survives of the fortress of Deva Victrix.
How we check facts
Every historical claim on this site comes from a published source: English Heritage, the council, the Chester Archaeological Society, Current Archaeology, and the work of archaeologists such as David Mason, often via the sources cited at the foot of each page. Where good sources disagree, as they do on the founding date and the size of the amphitheatre’s crowd, we say so instead of picking one.
Practical details, such as opening times and prices, were checked on 26 October 2026. They change, so always confirm with the venue before you travel.
The paintings and films
The reconstructions of Roman Chester on this site are artist’s impressions. They were made with AI image and video tools, art-directed and checked against the archaeological evidence for the fortress: its plan, its sandstone walls, the position of the amphitheatre and the dress and kit of soldiers around AD 100. They are meant to help you picture the place, not to record it exactly; where we show the real remains, we use photographs, credited on our credits page.
